Coming soon - a list of Basil Awards.
Here are 3 to start with...
Friendliest Player Award - Mariano. - this is now a lifetime achievement.... he has won this award for 4 years running now.
Friendliest/Happiest Grand Slam Winner... Gaston
Courage and Bravery Award - Fernando Gonzalez.
The first two should be self-explanatory.
The third goes to Fernando Gonzalez - he showed extreme courage and bravery one evening, by sitting in a crowded bar (with his friends) under a tv screen, while the screen was showing his match against Max Mirnyi.
TO be continued

These were the core ones that I am judging on.
1. Player of the Year - Roger Federer I'm sorry this is a no-brainer and doesn't really justify a thread or any votes, and it's very clear that Federer has been the best player of 2004.
2. Surprises and Disappointments of the Year 3. Best Newcomer 2004 4. Best Comeback Player 2004 5. Best Grand Slam Match of 2004? 6. Most Dramatic Match of 2004? 7. Best non-GS Slam match of 2004? 8. Thomas Muster Ironman of the Year Award? 9. Most Improved 2004?
10. You're Excused for 2004? This means players who have been injured for much of the year and their results have reflected an inability to play.
11. Why did they bother award? This is for players who for some reason besides major injuries, have had shocking performances and shouldn't have bothered to turn up for 2004.
12. Who will be the next big thing 2005?
13. Best Quote of 2004?

Well, I have to think about the rest of the categories, but there is one I have no doubt (besides Friendliest Player Award - Mariano and nr. 1, player of the year, of course), that is "4. Best Comeback Player 2004" --> I vote for Guillermo Cañas for this category, who, by the way, is waiting Agassi to quit to enter Houston's Master as a alternative player. [glow=red,2,300]Friendliest Player Award - Mariano[/glow]

Best Quote of 2004? Thanks GWH - Here are my votes for your awards... 1. OK Agreed.... 2. Still thinking 3. Juan Monaco 4. Marat Safin 5. MARIANO'S FIRST ROUND MATCH!!! - the post-court attention gets added to this award (as after all I KNOW Gaston's Win will get this award - this is Mariano's page after all ) I am sure Mercedes, Dayna, Kevin, CARINA!!! Marcus & Ros can all agree with this too - but I guess this really is also a "you had to be there.... award too 6. Stuttgart - M v Lopez - fantastic and brave well deserved win for M. 7. M v Oscar Hernandez in Kitzbuhel - the Player involving the Kids was brilliant 8. The Thomas Muster Thank you for not hitting me as revenge award... Mariano. (Thomas was practicing with him in Kitz and accidently hit Mariano really hard (they were both topless....) he gave Mariano the chance for revenge and even posed for his punishment. Mariano couldn't do it.... it was a beautiful respect moment. 9. Joachim Johansson 10. Mariano... for his sad absences in 2 of the 4 Grand Slams - I think he knows he was missed at both these events - and that our spies are already in place to hassle him at all 4 Grand Slams next year.... right GWH? 11. Andre Agassi.... [fill in the gap...................] 12. Juan Monaco. 13. "....... yes I have many friends here in Kitzbuhel friends and fans that support me in ALL of my matches..... I really appreciate their support...."

I love these awards and of course Louise I haven't forgotten about the little task I have got to do.
That Kitzbhuel moment with Muster would have been priceless to see.
Was there any doubt about the friendliest player award?

Here my votes for some of GWH's awards: 1. Roger Federer 2. Surprise: The new French Open champ, I guess Disappointments: There were a few, but mostly it was because of injuries. 3. J. Johansson (is he a newcomer?) 4. Guillermo Canas 5. I am with Louise. My personal best Grand Slam match was Mariano's first round victory in Roland Garros. He played really well AND it was a very, very special match to me as Mariano was winning a match for the very first time in front of me ! Of course the after-match moments were unforgettable, as well ! 6. The French Open final and the men's doubles gold medal match in Athens. 7. Mariano-Massu in Kitzbuhel. Ok, I only saw the match on my pc screen, but I saw enough to know that it was an amazing match . 8. Nicolas Massu and Gonzo for their efforts in Athens. 9. J. Johansson 10. JCF, although he is not really my favourite player. Also also Guga and Michel Kratochvil. Hope they will be healthier next year. 11. Don't really want to comment on this one for some reason.... 12. Juan Monaco of course - he has the best training partner ! 13. "To play Gaston is good and bad. Good because he is my best friend and bad also because he is my best friend and that makes it difficult to play against". Mariano in Bastad before the final. Some more awards: Friendliest player: Mariano (goes without saying) Best tournament (result-wise): Bastad Most fan-friendly tournament: Kitzbuhel Best player who defended a title: Mariano, obviously (ok, Roger defending Wimbledon was not too bad either) The most beautiful emotions: Gaston's tears and speech in RG Nicest doubles team: Mariano/Gaston in Basel and Gaston/Chelita Best surprise at the start of the year: Mariano playing in Chile in Lacoste Best fan website: This one, of course ! Will think of more awards later.... Have a nice weekend everyone !

Hi! I'll have to think of some, but here's what I know. Or shall I just say I'm mostly with Corina? 1. Player of the Year - yes, that's no question 2. Surprises - has to be the RG Although it was more than a surprise. It was a miracle. And as it's in the plural: how great the Olympics were, I mean tennis-wise Disappointments - the number of injuries. There was not one big tournament with a "full field" Robredo in the Barcelona final. Although it wasn't a complete surprise, but still... 3. Best Newcomer 2004 - Not sure. Maybe Berdych 4. Best Comeback Player 2004 - Agree with both Canas and Safin 5. Best Grand Slam Match of 2004 - RG final There were better ones tennis-wise, (like AO Safin-Agassi, or W- Roger-Lleyton) but it's still THE BEST 6. Most Dramatic Match of 2004- again the RG final And, as Corina said, the Gold Match in doubles in Athens. And the Bronze match in singles, too. 7. Best non-GS Slam match of 2004 - Massu-Mariano in Kitz, and the whole Saturday in Athens 8. Thomas Muster Ironman of the Year Award - Massu and Gonzo in Athens That's all at the moment.

OK - mine are going to be quite different from most other people here, and I hope I don't get too much criticism for not mentioning the subject of this Board! However, I have tried to answer GWH and others' questions as objectively as possible - and apologies to GWH who has seen most of these answers before over on MTF:- 1. Player of the Year - Roger Federer 2. Surprises and Disappointments - Surprise - Tim Henman doing so well at Roland Garros Disapppointments - David's continuing catalogue of injuries. 3. Best Newcomer - Joachim Johansson 4. Best Comeback Player - Guillermo Canas 5. Best Grand Slam Match - Agassi/Safin - Oz Open 6. Most Dramatic Match - French Open Final 7. Best non-Grand Slam Match - Agassi/Safin again in Madrid TMS, and from a totally personal point of view - Nalbandian/Mantilla at Monte Carlo 8. Ironman of the Year - Nicolas Massu 9. Most Improved - Thomas Berdych 10. Your Excused - Juan-Carlos Ferrero and David (although finishing Number 9 in the world despite all those injuriesand only playing half the year isn't bad in my opinion!) 11. Why Did they Bother - Mark P. (sorry Corina) 12. Next Big Thing - Rafael Nadal 13. Best Quote - Marat's famous hippo story below:- "I'm not fighting with myself. Oh, my God. That's how I am. You know, the story of the hippo? The hippo comes to the monkey and said, listen, I'm not a hippo. So, he paint himself like a zebra. He said but he's still a hippo. He said but look at you, you're painted like a zebra but you are a hippo. So then he goes, you know, like I want be a little parrot. So, he put the colours on him and he comes to the monkey and said but, sorry, you are a hippo. So, in the end, you know, he comes and said I'm happy to be a hippo. This is who I am. So, I have to be who I am and he's happy being a hippo. " And for the "other" awards........... Best Public Speaker - Marat Friendliest Player - David Best tournament - tie between Basel and Monte Carlo Best Players' Hotel - 3-way tie between Monte Carlo/Basel/Vienna Best Party Place - in my opinion, it isn't the place it's the people who are there(!) - so I'll say any place where I've spent happy times with those I care deeply about in 2004 -but Basel Hotel comes very high on the list.

Best tournament (result-wise): Roland Garros Most fan-friendly tournament: Vienna Best player who defended a title: Roger at Wimbledon Most beautiful emotions: Gaston at Roland Garros Nicest doubles team: David and Marat who played together ober the Summer, and, of course, Massu/Gonzalez Best surprise at the start of the year: David winning Kooyong beating Agassi and Rodthingy along the way

1. Player of the Year - Roger Federer I'm sorry this is a no-brainer and doesn't really justify a thread or any votes, and it's very clear that Federer has been the best player of 2004.
2. Gaudio winning the French Open and Massu winning gold both in singles and doubles at the Olympics. Disappointment : The Argentine DC team.
3. Florian Mayer 4. Canas and Safin 5. Canas vs Henman at the AO. The great result, the warrior spirit of Canas, all the Henman fans choked up, great to be there. 6. Gaudio vs Coria RG final 7. I will get back to that. 8. Massu 9. J.Johansson 10. El Ayanoui and Ferrero 11. The Poo 12. Nico Almagro 13. Marat "Happy Hippo" Safin.

OK, here are my nominees... the problem is, that mostly I have to agree with previous answers (this is the price for being always late...), but anyway here is my list, too: friendliest player: do I really have a choice? i don't think so... so, it is Mariano Zabaleta friendliest coach: Alejandro Gattiker (generally, and Horacio De La Pena in Athens) 1. Player of the Year: no doubt about it... Roger Federer 2. (Best) Surprise of the year: Gaston winning the RG 3. Best newcomer: Berdych 4. Best comeback player: Canas and Haas (it is good to have you back!) 5. Best Grand Slam Match: I was not able to watch many of them, but the RG Final was definietly something GOOD ;D. 6. Most dramatic match: hmm, for me live matches are always more dramatic than just watching them on TV, so I have 3 matches in that category and all of them from Athens: two with the perfect end-result: the Doubles Gold and the Singles Bronze match , and one dramatic match which made me as sad as only few matches have made me befor: Gonza against Fish . 7. Best non-GS match: again from live experience: Mariano vs. Massu in Kitzbühel. Simple the magic of tennis. 8. Thomas Muster Ironman of the Year: Fernando Gonzalez playing an amazing match (16-14 in the third set) for the Bronze at the Olympics, and soon after that 5 sets for the Gold in the Doubles. 9. Most improved: maybe this is the most difficult question to be answered (improved based on results or based on the game?), so I think I will come back later to this issue. 10. You are excused for 2004: JCF (he has never ever been one of my favorites - and I put it midly... - but I really felt sorry for him this year) 11. why did they bother? There are some, but I do not care about them... I totally agree with Louise at the followings: Best tournament: Kitzbühel (best ever) Best unofficial party place: the Londoner, Kitzbühel Best Hotel: the Bercy one My personal award (and I think Egg and Giovi will join): loveliest landlord: Herr Brugge in Kitzbühel Worst tournament: Milan (and despite of some nice moments I had serious problems with the Madrid TMS, too) The most beautiful emotions: I am with Corina and Ros: Gaston at the RG Nicest doubles team: I wish I could have seen the Mariano and Gaston team, but unfortunately I couldn't, so for this year I have a joint nomination for the Gaudio/Chelita and for the Gonza/Massu team. And at the same time I wold like to announce the award for the most entertaining doubles match of the year: and this goes to the Gaudio/Chela vs. Gonza/Massu match in Barcelona. Best fan site: hmmm.... let me think about it.... of course this one!!!!!

A bet you're happy to have Haas back! Yes, yes, yessss: herr Brugge is THE BEST!!!!! And to the add to the Kitz-list: best Caipirinha, and cutest barmen. I mean barman. Hm, I can see that the Bets Doubles Match of the World has turned into the most entertaining one. I can't imagine why....
